See alternate title: The Minimum You Should Know About the Company Before the Interview
You've landed an interview—congratulations! The nerves are kicking in, and the pressure's on (ha, no pressure!). You’ve probably practiced your answers, picked out your best interview outfit, and maybe even Googled a few interview tips (and maybe you met with a Panoramic Talent Career Coach - and don't really need to do much else because you are feeling CONFIDENT). But before you step foot into that interview room (or log into that video call), there’s one crucial element you can’t overlook: understanding the company you want to join.
But how much do you really need to know? Here’s the bare minimum:
1. The Company’s Mission and Values
This is where it all starts. The mission statement tells you what the company is all about—their purpose, their reason for existing. Do they want to revolutionize technology, make the world more sustainable, or simply be the best at what they do? Their values will tell you what they stand for. Knowing these gives you a glimpse into whether their goals align with yours. Plus, if you can mention how you embody these values during your interview, you’re bound to impress!
2. Their Products or Services
Imagine sitting in an interview, and they ask, "What’s your favorite product of ours?" and you freeze (BEEN THERE!). Don’t be that person! Know what they sell, make, or do. Even better, be familiar with their flagship products or services and have an opinion on them. If it’s a tech company, download their app. If it’s a retail brand, visit one of their stores. It shows initiative and genuine interest.
3. Key Players in the Company
Who’s running the show? It’s good to know the names of the CEO, founders, or any other key figures. If you’re interviewing for a role on a specific team, look up the head of that department. Even if you don’t bring up these names in the interview, knowing them can give you a better understanding of the company’s leadership style and priorities.
4. Recent News and Developments
What’s the latest buzz around the company? Have they launched a new product, acquired another company, or been in the news for something noteworthy? Staying current on this shows that you’re not only interested in the company’s past but also its future. It also gives you fresh material to weave into your conversation.
5. The Company Culture
Are they all about innovation and fast-paced work? Or do they prioritize work-life balance and a collaborative environment? Understanding the company culture can help you determine if you’d be a good fit and allow you to tailor your responses accordingly. You can often get insights from the company’s social media, employee reviews on sites like Glassdoor, or even the “About Us” section on their website.
6. Competitors and Industry Trends
To show that you’re really plugged into the industry, it helps to know who the company’s main competitors are and what trends are shaking up the industry. This demonstrates that you’re thinking beyond the company and considering the bigger picture. Plus, it can set you up to ask insightful questions at the end of your interview, like how the company plans to stay ahead of its competitors.
7. Why You Want to Work There
Finally, tie all this knowledge back to why you want to work at this company specifically. What is it about their mission, products, culture, or recent developments that excites you? Make it clear that you’ve done your homework and that you see yourself contributing to their success.
THE BIG PICTURE: Be Curious!
The more you know, the more confident you’ll feel. But don’t stress if you can’t memorize every detail. Show enthusiasm, ask questions, and be genuinely curious about the company. Employers appreciate candidates who are eager to learn and grow with the company.
So, before you step into that interview, take a little time to explore. The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to make a lasting impression—and maybe even land the job!
